The Importance of Proper Nutrition

As many have come to realize, our food choices affect our overall health significantly. By practicing and maintaining proper nutrition through the active selection of healthy food choices, we can protect our health.
That said, how can we define nutrition? According to Natalie Butler, RD, LD, nutrition is the supply of food which is consumed by organisms and cells for sustenance. According to WHO, nutrition is the consumption of food in adherence to the body’s dietary needs.
Of course, there is a fine line between good nutrition and poor nutrition. WHO states that good nutrition can be defined as a diet that is well balanced and is often augmented with physical activity. This is where one ensures that the body gets the vitamins, mineral, and nutrients that the body needs on a daily basis.
Poor nutrition, however, is the reason an increased number of diseases have skyrocketed and the productivity of a nation reduced. Additionally, poor nutrition hinders the proper mental and physical development of an individual.
Essentially, proper nutrition is of dire importance. Below are a few highlighted reasons as to why.
Improves Well- Being
An individual with a healthy well- being can generally be described as one who enjoys a high- quality life. The World Health Organization defines mental health as a positive state of well- being. Hence, the state of one’s mental health can generally influence an individual’s quality of life.
According to the Mental Health Foundation, individuals that consume fruits and vegetables on a daily basis rarely experience mental health issues. A healthy diet can also ensure physical health, as long as it includes the necessary carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, and minerals.
